Dealing with Security Guards

A security guard is required to deter and detect unusual or suspicious activity. The following are key points that the contact person should discuss with the security guard:

  • Assignment of a liaison from the organization to the security guard
  • Requirements of the assignment
  • Liaison contact and how to immediately reach him/her.
  • Escalation procedures when threats detected or being repelled
  • Special circumstances detailed
  • Purpose of security during the prescribed times. Define any times that heightened security may be required.
  • Inform the security guard that they will be assessed during the shift for alertness.
  • Rules of conduct that enhance effectiveness. For example, guards need to be serious and professional.
  • Especially in highly sensitive locations, the need for separation of personal and professional conduct is required.

No matter the “rank” of the person that might be violating policy, a guard must react as an act of policy no matter the violator. If a security guard does not enforce breach of policy, they will be ineffective.

  • Layout of the facility.
