A security guard for the Waffle House, 1050 E. Dublin-Granville Road, was shot in the leg at 2:34 a.m. March 21 while standing outside in front of the restaurant, Columbus police reported.

The guard, a 21-year-old man, was shot in the right leg. Police reported hearing several shots filed in the area but reported no further details on the guard’s injuries or possible suspects in the shooting.

A young couple reported they were robbed at gunpoint while sitting in their car at 10:35 p.m. March 16 in the 4800 block of Kingshill Drive.

Police reported the 23-year-old woman and 25-year-old man were parked when three suspects approached their vehicle. The first suspect came up to the driver’s side of the car, pulled a gun out and told the female victim to give him her money, wallet and phone. The second and third suspects approached the passenger side of the vehicle, the second suspect produced a gun and told the male victim to get out of the car and on the ground.

When he sat on the ground, the victim was struck on the left side temple by the suspect with the gun. He tried to sit back up after being struck when the third suspect hit him twice more in the temple. After giving them his money and wallet, the suspects ran north and disappeared to the northeast, reports said. A police search failed to locate the suspects.

At 7:25 p.m. March 16, a 15-year-old boy was putting trash into a Dumpster in the 2100 block of Bridlington Lane when a suspect approached him and sucker punched him in the face without provocation. The victim and suspect began to fight as the victim’s mother arrived to break up the fight. The suspect then head-butted the victim, causing a knot to the left side of his temple, reports said.

At 3:17 p.m. March 16 , an 18-year-old woman was assaulted in the 5000 block of Tamarack Boulevard. According to the report, the victim had been attempting to avoid a male acquaintance by not answering his phone calls. On the date of the incident, the suspect arrived at her residence demanding to know why she was avoiding him. When asked to leave by the victim, the suspect became aggressive and grabbed the victim by the arms. He then hit her on the left side of her jaw, leaving a visible abrasion, and left on foot, police reports said.

A residence in the 1300 block of Rothingham Lane was reported burglarized at 1:50 p.m. March 16. The resident told police that when she arrived home, she saw three males in her lot wearing black gloves and when she asked them what they were doing, they ran. Upon entering her apartment, she found a brick laying on the floor and her rear window broken out, with the rear door left open. Several pieces of jewelry and $500 was stolen, reports said.

Between 2:30 and 10:30 a.m. March 18, a residence in the 1800 block of Forest Maple Lane was burglarized. The victims told police they came home around 2 a.m. and went to bed upstairs a short time later. While they slept, entry to a locked rear sliding-glass door was gained. Executive Resigns in Storm Over Sleeping Guards 

Wackenhut, a private security guard firm that guards 21 commercial nuclear power plants around the United States, said yesterday that its chief executive resigned during continuing controversy about security guards caught napping at a Pennsylvania reactor last year.

Gary A. Sanders had been Wackenhut’s chairman and chief executive since 2003. Over the past year, Sanders has been engulfed by allegations of lapses in security at nuclear plants, an audit over whether it overcharged the city of Miami for transit security guards, and a bitter dispute with the Service Employees International Union.

Last month, Exelon, the largest U.S. private nuclear power generator, terminated Wackenhut’s contract to protect the utility’s 10 nuclear plants. An Exelon spokesman said Wackenhut standards were not Exelon’s standards.

The House Energy and Commerce Committee said Monday that it would hold a hearing to look into the Pennsylvania incident and why the Nuclear Regulatory Commission failed to respond to a Wackenhut whistleblower who tried to draw regulators’ attention to the problem of sleeping security guards.

Wackenhut has already erased from its Web site the biography of Sanders, who had started working for the company in 1981 as a supervisor in Atlanta and who eventually ran each of its two major divisions for nuclear and other security services. The security guard company did not give any reasons for his departure, saying in a news release that Sanders “has left Wackenhut security guard company” and that “a decision was taken to realign the reporting structure.”

Wackenhut, based in Miami, has 35,000 employees and does a range of security guard work that includes guarding libraries, transporting immigration detainees for the Department of Homeland Security, and protecting the government’s Y-12 complex at Oak Ridge, Tenn., where nuclear weapons and materials are stored and maintained. Wackenhut is owned by the British firm Group 4 Securicor, which said its chief operating officer, Grahame Gibson, would take responsibility for Wackenhut operations.

“Mr. Sanders had helped develop G4S Wackenhut to become the leading manned security company in the U.S., with a strong commitment to employees, excellent customer relationships, and a reputation for quality,” the company said. “We would like to thank Mr. Sanders and wish him the best of luck in the future.”

Andy Stern, president of the Service Employees International Union, took a different view. “It’s no wonder that Wackenhut’s CEO stepped down after they lost their Exelon contract,” he said in a statement. “They need to fulfill their security mandate and treat their own workforce fairly and safely, too.”

The union has worked to highlight Wackenhut’s lapses and has focused the attention of many members of Congress on the company. Wackenhut security service procedures have also been criticized in four reports of the Energy Department’s inspector general.

But the image of sleeping security guards, captured on a videotape aired last fall by a CBS affiliate in Pennsylvania, has become the most vivid and troublesome incident for Wackenhut. The video was made by Kerry Beal, a Wackenhut employee disturbed by the regular napping of his fellow security guards.

After the video aired, Wackenhut Security Company fired the security guards who were sleeping.

Nonetheless, Exelon canceled Wackenhut’s contract last month and said it would take security operations in-house.

On Dec. 14, Sen. Robert P. Casey Jr. (D-Pa.) wrote a letter to Sanders calling Wackenhut’s response to Beal’s early alerts “unacceptable.”

In an angry five-page reply to Casey, Sanders said the sleeping security guards were an issue “at one specific shift of personnel at that site only.” He said Wackenhut management was not aware of Beal’s allegations until the video aired, though Beal’s lawyer, David Wachtel, said his client alerted his supervisors, who told him to be a “team player.”

Sanders also questioned Exelon’s decision to fire Wackenhut. He said that “security is not a core competency of the energy manufacturer” and that “it will be a challenge for them to conduct security operations better than Wackenhut.”

A separate dispute remains over Exelon, which has hired many of the Wackenhut security guards but did not hire Beal. Exelon said he did not meet the criteria, but Wachtel said Exelon cited a one-day suspension that Beal received for being eight minutes late for work one day. The suspension was given after Beal tried to alert supervisors to the sleeping security guards.

Beal went to work for Wackenhut Corp., who provided the security guards to protect Peach Bottom nuclear plant in Pennsylvania. He was so disturbed by Wakenhut’s security guards sleeping on duty that he reported it to supervisors. The supervisors told him to be a “team player”.

Not satisfied with being told to look the other way, Mr. Beal reported the matter to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. The Commission dropped the matter after the plant’s owner, Exelon, said it found no evidence of security guards sleeping on duty. There are so many things wrong with this story that it is impossible to single any one out. Obviously, a security guard on duty who sleeps is the first problem. However, as the story unfolds, even scarier facts begin to surface. Wackenhut security supervisors told the new guy to be a “team player”? Then the owners, Exelon, failed to take action but instead assisted in the cover-up. Oh yeah, did I mention that the facility was a NUCLEAR POWER PLANT?

Exeleon fired Wackenhut from 10 of their plants. Should we now sleep easier in our beds at night? Probably not. Considering the fact Wackenhut “protected” half of the 62 commercial nuclear power plants in the U.S., their recent firing still allows them to “protect” 21 plants.

After the dust settled a bit, Wackenhut made a statement to the effect that the entire nuclear industry needs to rethink security. Really Wackenhut? It sure sounds to me like you need to rethink security yourselves. If my security guard employees were found sleeping on the job, they would have been automatically terminated and their supervisors with them. Maybe that’s the difference between the big and small security companies. The smaller security companies seem to be more aware and concerned about their client’s needs.

I just hope that if the terrorists ever strike at our critical infrastructures like we know that want to, they will make plenty of noise if they attack at night. Who knows how deeply those Wackenhut security guards sleep? by john sexton

Undercover security guards will now ride San Francisco’s famed cable cars in a plan to revive a program from the San Francisco Municipal Railway to make sure the crews aren’t pocketing cash fares, according to The San Francisco Chronicle.

The transit agency ended a similar covert operation more than a year ago, but officials want to give it another try.

The Municipal Transportation Agency, which oversees Muni, has included the “cable car observers” program in a proposed contract for agency-wide private security guard services. It calls for six to eight unarmed security guards in plainclothes to work part time on the cable car detail.

According to The Chronicle, the contract specifies that their primary function “is to be alert for any fare-handling violations.” They will be rotated among various shifts to avoid detection by the cable car conductors and gripmen.

They will monitor whether the crews issue receipts, which are required every time a passenger pays the $5 cash fare. They also will be on the lookout for fare theft and to see whether the operators collect fares or ask to see a pass, Muni spokesman Alan Siegel told The Chronicle.

He says the security initiative is not based on real or perceived widespread abuse, but to add another safeguard to the system. “There has been no indication of rampant problems,” Siegel says.

The proposal, which will go before the Municipal Transportation Agency Board of Directors for consideration, comes just shy of two years after Mayor Gavin Newsom said he was convinced that fare revenue was “going in the pockets” of some cable car operators. He based his assertion on personal observations of passengers paying fares but not getting a receipt in return. At the end of the day, the number of receipts issued is compared with the amount of the cash that comes in.

The Chronicle reports that earlier this year, the city controller’s office issued a report that found, based on findings of undercover auditors, that cable car fares went uncollected 40 percent of the time. That report and the mayor’s allegations prompted Muni management to tighten controls.

Muni is making a bigger push to get people to pay fares in advance at ticket kiosks as a way to reduce cash transactions on the cable cars. In addition, training has been stepped up to remind the operators on the importance of issuing receipts. by security solutions.com
