The Navy Ship will be formally commissioned next week.The 509-foot-long Spruance is a multimission ship that will carry Tomahawk cruise missiles and two helicopters.

“It was the commanding officer’s choice on where he wanted the commissioning,” said Trice Denny, spokesman for Naval Air Station Key West, where the destroyer arrived. “He picked Key West because he has been here before, and he knew it would be memorable for the crew and their families.”

Another reason for holding the ceremony in the southernmost city on the United States’ mainland, Denny said, is because of the ship’s name. The ship is named for Adm. Raymond Spruance, who directed aircraft carriers during the Battle of Midway in World War II.

The vessel opened to the public on Saturday and on September 30 from 1 to 4 p.m.

After it is commissioned, the Spruance will be based in San Diego.

JACKSON, MS July 26 2011

Jackson police were called to the gas station located at 855 Fortification Street around 2:30AM Tuesday morning. Police say an attempted robbery turned fatal for the man guarding the station.

Sgt. Joseph Daughtry with the Jackson Police Department says, “we found one subject the clerk suffering from a single gunshot wound and we do have the security guard that was shot and he is deceased.”

Police say the 54 year-old security guard, who was armed, was shot twice while trying to protect the store clerk. Jackson Police Officer Colendula Green says, “to my knowledge the security guard was shot once in the chest and the arm.”

Co-workers say the security guard worked at the station for five or six months. He wasn’t actually scheduled to work Tuesday morning, but came in because he wanted too.

Police say the 26 year-old clerk, Suvin Sharth was shot in the leg. Sharth’s injuries aren’t life threatening. Police say any information you may have can help crack this case. “If there’s anybody that was passing by this location that saw anything no matter how small it may be, no matter what they think they might have seen we ask them to contact the Jackson Police Department,” says Sgt. Daughtry.

Some individuals that work at the gas station say in the four years they’ve worked at the station, they’ve never experienced an attempted armed robbery.

Police say they’re looking for two black male suspects who were masked when they entered the gas station. The Shell is closed for the remainder of Tuesday.

California Security Guard Jaime Alberto Villacorta

SANTA ANA CALIFORNIA. – June 10, 2010 – Breaking News
A homicide investigation is under way after an unarmed security guard was shot and killed outside an apartment complex in Santa Ana California.

The shooting was reported just before midnight Friday on the 1400 block of South Townsend Avenue.

When officers arrived, they found the man, identified as 24-year-old Jaime Alberto Villacorta, shot to death in an alley.

Villacorta had “at least one” gunshot wound, Cpl. Anthony Bertagna of the Santa Ana Police Department said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The security guard was not armed and was responsible for protecting the entire apartment complex, Bertagna said.

A motive was not immediately known.

“At this point we don’t know if he was responding to some incident that was occurring here or he was the victim of a crime himself,” Bertagna told KTLA.

A man identifying himself as Villacorta’s stepfather said the security guard had problems in the past with “racist” people in the area. He also said the security guard feared for his safety and wanted to carry a gun.

“There is some gang activity in the neighborhood,” Bertagna said, adding that it was not yet known if gangs were responsible for the shooting.

Residents of the apartment complex said Villacorta recently had at least two run-ins with gang members. During one confrontation, Villacorta was said to have been so scared that he ran and hid inside a laundry room.
