Almost three hours after a bank teller cut what may have been a bomb from his clothing and exited a Coral Gables Bank of America shirtless and in handcuffs, authorities continued to search for three bank robbers while also examining the contents of a device containing “bomb-making materials.”

They also continued to question the teller, Diego Uscamayta, whom police still consider a victim but have yet to clear in the robbery.

“I can’t say where this person stands,” said Dena Choucair, assistant special agent in charge of the FBI in Miami, who called the incident “unusual.”

According to authorities and friends, three gunmen burst into Uscamayta’s home in the Nob Hill apartments in the 9800 block of Kendall Drive about midnight.

They held Uscamayta, 26, and his father at gunpoint for about seven hours before strapping what they said was a bomb to the teller’s back.

One gunman stayed at the home, while the other two placed Uscamayta in his 1998 red Ford Mustang and drove him to the bank where he works at 1540 S. Dixie Hwy.

“They sent him inside and stayed outside,” said Coral Gables Police Chief Richard Naue. “They said, ‘We have a triggering device. Get as much money as you can and bring it out to us.’ ”

Naue said the bank had not yet opened, but a branch manager was inside. She opened the safe and Uscamayta provided a large amount of cash to the robbers, who took off in his Mustang, Naue said.

The branch manager made it out of the bank sometime Friday morning, and Uscamayta was escorted from the building just before noon.

Police are still looking for the Mustang, which has a license tag of R958DY.

Federal agents are also still examining the contents of the device, which was secured by the Miami-Dade bomb squad.

“There were bomb-making materials in this device,” Choucair said. “It was attached to the clothing on his back.”

Choucair could not say whether the device was actually a working bomb.

Naue said neither Uscamayta nor his father were injured.

Hugo Nuñez del Prado, a close friend of Uscamayta’s, said the teller was likely targeted because he had recently been promoted and had a set of keys to the bank, though authorities wouldn’t say whether he knew his abductors.

Del Prado said he does not believe his friend was involved in the robbery in any way.

“I was praying to God that he would be OK,” he said. “He is the victim.”

Uscamayta’s sister, Karla, is also an employee at the same bank, he said.

Emergency dispatch received calls of a robbery in progress at the bank just after 8 a.m., setting off a massive police response that surrounded the bank, located near the University of Miami.

The FBI, Coral Gables police and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were involved in the investigation. Authorities surrounded the bank.

With news that two bank employees were held hostage inside, bomb squad members sent in robots while negotiators tried to make contact with those inside the bank.

Traffic on U.S. 1 and the Metrorail were shut down, workers of nearby businesses stood around confused in police staging areas, and employees of the bank huddled in a nearby Publix praying.

An iPhone app launched this week could have saved Tiger Woods a lot of trouble, Time reported Friday on its Web site.

The fittingly named TigerText allows users to set a time limit on how long a text remains on a recipient’s phone after it’s read. Once the message’s lifespan ends, the app’s developers say there’s no trace of it on any phones or servers.

When, for example, a cheating spouse sends his mistress an iPhone message via TigerText, the mistress will be prompted to install the app. The mistress is able to read messages but not keep them, the app’s developers say, because messages are stored on TigerText’s servers and are never actually sent to phones.

When the time span elected by the adulterer has elapsed, a message ceases to exist. Cheaters can even select a “delete on read” setting, which gives a recipient 60 seconds to read a text.

The app also allows users to delete any evidence of a phone call, Time reported.

Founder Jeffrey Evans, a former recruiter and headhunter, claims the app’s name was in place well before the Tiger Woods scandal. Evans told Time he created the app as a way to ensure privacy, not assist cheating spouses.

Man claims he’s owed part of his $100,000 bounty.

Already facing criminal charges, R. Kelly has been hit with another civil lawsuit.

A private detective from Kansas City is suing the R&B singer, claiming that the singer hired him to locate a stolen videotape and didn’t pay up in full. Charles Freeman filed his breach of contract suit on July 12 in a Jackson County Circuit Court in Missouri. He’s seeking $75,000 in damages.

Last month, the singer pleaded not guilty to 21 counts of child pornography stemming from a videotape which Chicago police and Cook County, Illinois, prosecutors say depicts the singer having sex with a 14-year-old girl (see “R. Kelly Pleads Not Guilty To Child Pornography Charges”). (Click for a full explanation of the charges against R. Kelly.)

Freeman’s suit claims Kelly hired him via private detective Jack Palladino last August and agreed to pay him $100,000 plus up to $40,000 in expenses to recover the stolen videotape, described in a contract as a performance tape.

Palladino’s office, which has been working with Kelly on various sex tape and bootleg issues (see “Girl In Alleged R. Kelly Tape Said To Be 14-Year-Old Niece Of Singer Sparkle”), would neither confirm nor deny Freeman’s employment, saying, “That’s not information we could or would give out.”

According to their contract, Palladino hired Freeman on August 21, 2001, and gave him until August 23 to recover and return the sole copy of the tape. At this point, Freeman was to submit to a polygraph test to attest that “the stolen items he has recovered and will be turning over are all the material that exists, and that he knows of no other copies (whether in whole or in part) in any form.” The contract also had one more condition — that Freeman was to keep all information about the recovered tape confidential.

Freeman recovered the tape, his lawsuit contends, and passed the polygraph. He was then paid $65,000, he claims, and was told that the remainder of his fee would be forthcoming.

Kelly’s camp, meanwhile, said that the singer plans to defend himself vigorously against this latest lawsuit. “We’re confident that when the facts come out,” Kelly’s spokesperson Allan Mayer said, “the suit will be shown to have no merit.”

R. Kelly has been hit with four additional civil suits, the most recent of which involved a woman who claimed she was the subject of a sex tape which made its way into the bootleg market (see “R. Kelly Sued By Woman Claiming To Be Sex Tape Subject”). The basis of the other three lawsuits involved accusations that he took advantage of minors and engaged in criminal sexual conduct. Britney Spears Hires Private Investigator, Kevin Federline’s Attorney Says He’s “Not Concerned”

Kevin Federline’s attorney is speaking out about a recent report that Britney Spears has hired a private investigator to dig up dirt in their ongoing custody battle.

TMZ.com first reported the news Monday.

“I think that if that is what they need to do, or have to do, to have at it,” Federline’s counsel, Mark Vincent Kaplan, tells Usmagazine.com. “I don’t think it will, in anyway, be a good expenditure of funds. But I can’t stop that from happening.”

However, he said it would be a waste of time for them to follow Federline, 29, around.

“I don’t think he would be concerned about it, and I don’t think he has to change anything he is doing in order to address that,” Kaplan added.

DRIVING UPDATE – NEWS

Meanwhile, Spears’ attorney Anne Kiley revealed Monday to Usmagazine.com that Spears — who has been banned from driving with her kids in the car — has decided to hire a driver to avoid any dangerous incidents with the paparazzi.

Though Kaplan said he hasn’t seen that Spears, 25, has hired a driver or read Kiley’s statement, he tells Us, “anything that puts the children in a car that reduces the risk … I am all for that.”

He added, “We are only concerned when she is driving the kids.”

For Federline’s part, Kaplan said his client tries his best not to take his kids out in front of the paparazzi. “He’s pretty good about keeping the kids at home with him unless there is really a compelling reason why they need to be going somewhere,” he said.

THANKSGIVING PLANS

He would not comment whether Spears will celebrate Thanksgiving with her sons on Wednesday, and Federline will have them Thursday, as reported by TMZ.com Monday.

A recent article in Baseline Magazine details how legislators in South Carolina have introduced pending legislation where “digital forensic evidence gathered for use in a court in this state must be collected by a person with a PI license or through a PI licensed agency.”

The Texas Private Security Board recently made a ruling regarding the licensing regulations which effect computer security consultants and computer forensic examiners. They felt that it is important that these computer related practitioners, as well as the entities hiring their services, are familiar with the licensing regulations, as violations carry steep financial and legal penalties.

There is no doubt that these regulations will cause computer forensic experts to create strategic business alliances with private investigators to insure that evidence they collect is not thrown out of court over licensing issues.
